National Disaster Risk Management Fund Board Holds Meeting in Mogadishu
Mogadishu, (SONNA) — The National Disaster Risk Management Fund Board held a meeting at the headquarters of the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) in Mogadishu, bringing together senior government officials and representatives from different sectors to discuss preparedness for Super El Niño and flood risks.
The meeting was chaired by the Minister of Interior, Federal Affairs and Reconciliation, H.E. Ali Yusuf Ali (Hosh), and brought together members of the Federal Cabinet, SoDMA Commissioner H.E. Mahamuud Moallim, representatives of the Banadir Regional Administration, religious scholars, civil society representatives and business leaders.
The discussions focused on the Government’s preparedness for Super El Niño, clearing waterways, strengthening the National Disaster Risk Management Fund and taking measures to reduce the risks posed by flooding.
The Minister of Defence, H.E. Ahmed Moalim Fiqi, called for coordinated preparedness and early action based on El Niño forecasts, stressing the need for full readiness in Banadir to protect its large and vulnerable population.
The Minister of Environment and Climate Change, H.E. Lt. Gen. Bashir Mohamed Jama, stressed the importance of clearing waterways and key drainage points, strengthening early warning systems and raising public awareness to reduce the risks associated with Super El Niño and flooding.
The Minister of Planning, H.E. Hon. Beenebeene, stressed the Government’s focus on reducing disaster risks and called for united efforts among government institutions, humanitarian agencies and the private sector.
The Banadir Deputy Governor for Security and Political Affairs, Mohamed Ahmed Diriye (Yabooh), outlined plans to drain flood-affected areas, prepare for El Niño rains and develop lasting solutions to flood risks.
The meeting underscored the importance of coordinated preparedness, early action, strengthened warning systems and joint efforts to reduce the impact of Super El Niño and flooding on communities.
