Somalia Participates in Regional Climate Finance Meeting in Brazil

SALVADOR, (SONNA) — Somalia participated in the second Regional Meeting of Finance Ministries on Climate Action, held in Salvador, Brazil, bringing together officials and experts from African and South American countries.

Somalia was represented by the Executive Director of the Somali National Climate Change Fund, Liban Obsiye, who shared the country’s experience in climate finance, highlighting progress, existing challenges and the need to effectively direct climate funding toward vulnerable countries heavily affected by climate change.

The three-day meeting focused on exchanging experiences and identifying opportunities to strengthen the mobilisation and financing of climate action. Discussions covered different approaches to accessing climate finance, including domestic revenue, public-private partnerships (PPPs) and disaster risk financing.

Obsiye also highlighted Somalia’s approach to strengthening resilience through joint efforts between the Government and communities and called for more effective climate financing for vulnerable countries.

The meeting further discussed the importance of international cooperation, innovation and knowledge-sharing in expanding climate finance and developing sustainable solutions, as well as regional integration and experiences in green climate initiatives and financing.

The second edition of the regional meeting was jointly organised by the French Development Agency, Brazil’s Ministry of Finance, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), and the Institute for Climate Economics.
